BatLife Europe calls for bat surveys in the installation of wind farms in Republic of Macedonia
6th March
Macedonian Power Plants (a national electricity producer) is planning to install wind farms in Southern Macedonia without first carrying out proper bat surveys in the pre-installation process.
BatLife Europe is raising this issue at the highest level and are supporting our Macedonian partner, the Bird Study and Protection Society of Macedonia, Bat Study Group, in this matter. We have written with our strong concerns to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Macedonia and the Ministry for Environment; to the KfW bank (the financial backers for the wind turbine installation) and to Bankwatch (an international NGO that monitors the activities of international financial
institutions).
In our letter we draw attention to the situation and highlight that is vital to carry out a proper survey and study of bats (impact assessment) in the pre-installation process for wind farm installations.
